Breastfeeding is a learned skill that requires practice, patience, and perseverance. During the learning stages of breastfeeding, it can be a frustrating, uncomfortable, and emotional journey for some women. Other factors such as premature birth and poor milk supply can also contribute to feeding difficulties. But even when you are not making enough milk, have sore nipples, or have a baby who struggles to latch on, this does not mean that you must call it quits.
Lactation consultants are dedicated healthcare professionals who specialize in breastfeeding. They have received advanced training and hold a special certification to train new moms to breastfeed their baby successfully throughout all the ups and downs that can come with nursing. 4 Recent studies have reported that by enlisting the help of lactation consultants (like La Leche League breastfeeding support), the number of women choosing to breastfeed their babies measurably increased. It also influenced more women to breastfeed their babies exclusively and boosted overall breastfeeding rates.

In many cases, this is a new experience for mom. Even for mothers that have gone through the birth experience before, a Postpartum Doula can be a big help. A Postpartum Doula assists the new mother in caring for her newborn. Studies show that by demonstrating love, and care added by the Doula greatly benefits the future development of your baby. To your benefit, your Postpartum Doula will teach you important infant care skills and proven methods for keeping your child healthy, safe, and happy. From the beginning, when establishing a schedule for at home care, there is a benefit to having an extra set of hands so that mom can get much needed rest.
The postpartum doula is there for the mother and offers other supports such as Breastfeeding support, help with emotional and physical recovery after birth and even light housekeeping so that mom does not feel so overwhelmed. It may even be necessary to help the family by running errands or preparing light meals and offering other assistance.
